Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Glabrous lianas with herbaceous branches.

Stems:

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound (pinnately trifoliate). Alternate, tardily deciduous. Leaflets broadly ovate to broadly rhombic–ovate or ovate, the lateral ones usually asymmetrical, 6.5–12.5 cm long, 3.8–10.5 cm wide. Apex short-caudate or long-caudate. Surfaces glabrous; leaflets membranous, chartaceous when dry. Leaflet margins entire. Leaflets tripliveined, with several additional pairs of lateral veins, tertiary venation reticulate, veins parallel. Petioles 6–10 cm long. Stipules present, stipules ovate or deltate, 2–5 mm long, persistent, conspicuous. Leaflet stipels linear, 2–6 mm long.

Flowers: Flowers usually 2–3 per cluster, in pendulous axillary pseudoracemes 25–45 cm long. Flowers papilionaceous, elongated for bird or bat pollination. Bracts small, bracteoles orbicular or ovate, small, caducous; pedicels 15–45 mm long. Calyx 5-lobed, campanulate, 6–9 mm long, upper 2 lobes connate into an emarginate lip, the others 1.5–2.2 mm long, margins overlapping at base. Corolla bright scarlet; standard ovate–oblong with 2 appendages above the claw, becoming reflexed, 33–37 mm long, wings 15–20 mm long, much shorter than standard, and adhering to keel, keel petals 30–36 mm long. Stamens 10; upper stamen distinct, the other 9 connate into a tube. Ovary superior, stipitate; ovules usually 2; style filiform, glabrous apically; stigma small, terminal.

Fruit: Pods stipitate; obliquely ovoid or ellipsoid to oblong–ellipsoid; often sigmoid; 3–12 cm long; 4.5–6 cm wide; apparently indehiscent; with strongly veined valves. Seeds 1–2; black; subglobose; compressed; 2.3–3.3 cm in diameter; the hilum ⅓–½ the circumference of the seed.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Climbing and hanging from strees in mesic to wet forest.

Elevation Range: 180–825 m.
